HISTORY

The Marriage Circle represented German filmmaker Ernst Lubitsch’s first project under his recent contract with Warner Bros. Pictures. According to items in the 30 Aug 1923 FD and 10 Nov 1923 Moving Picture World, principal photography began 27 Aug 1923 and continued until late fall. A 9 Sep 1923 FD brief reported that Paul Perry had replaced Homer Scott as first cameraman.
       The 9 Feb 1924 and 2 Feb 1924 Moving Picture World indicated that the film premiered 16 Jan 1924 at the Rialto Theatre in Los Angeles, CA, followed by a 3 Feb 1924 opening at New York City’s Mark Strand Theatre.
       According to the 17 May 1924 Exhibitors Trade Review, Martin Printz, manager of the Circle Theatre in Cleveland, OH, considered the content “too racy for his patrons” and cut roughly one hundred feet of footage from the print. At Warner Bros.’ request, a court judge ordered Printz restore the film to its original theatrical form.
       Lubitsch directed another adaptation of Lothar Schmidt's play for Paramount in 1932, under the title One Hour with You (see entry). That film was a musical starring Maurice Chevalier and Jeanette MacDonald and was also released in foreign-language versions.
       Voted one of the “Top Best Features” of 1924 by the 1929 Film Daily Year Book, as reported in the Feb 7, 1930 FD. The Marriage Circle was restored by Martin Scorsese's The Film Foundation with support from the Museum of Modern Art ... More Less
