SYNOPSIS

Litovski, a Cossack general, stops at an inn and, inflamed by wine, attempts to rape the innkeeper's wife, Katherine, causing her to fall to her death. The innkeeper rushes at Litovski with a knife, and Litovski blinds him with a knout. Six years pass. The innkeeper's daughter, Vera, grows to womanhood and falls in love with violinist Paul Shilkiv, Litovski's illegitimate son. Vera attempts to kill Litovski, but Paul forestalls her.
