Var published two reviews of the film, the first on 18 Sep 1929, based on a projection room screening in New York City. The second review, printed on 2 Oct 1929, was written by Frank Tilley, a Var writer based in London who normally wrote on the British film industry. As noted in a foreword to the second review, which was written on 10 Sep following the pictures 9 Sep world premiere in London, Tilley's was the first British review of an American picture ever printed in Var.
       Both reviews highly praised star and producer Gloria Swanson, as well as the film's dialogue. As Tilley wrote: "On technical advance and story value, rated about the best talker seen here yet. Trespasser shows definite swing away from filmed stage play and develops motion picture technique in sound-film presentation to a point not previously put on screens here." According to numerous contemporary news items, Swanson was in London for the film's world premiere and was mobbed by fans during her stay. Swanson received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in The Trespasser, which was her first all-dialogue film.

SYNOPSIS

Marion Donnell, stenographer to Hector Ferguson, Chicago corporation lawyer, elopes with Jack Merrick, scion of a wealthy family. During their honeymoon, Jack's father convinces him to annul the marriage and arrange a proper society wedding, causing the enraged Marion to leave him. More than a year later, Marion is living in a tenement with her child and has returned to her job at the law office. Suffering a breakdown as a result of her financial straits, she is aided by her employer, who furnishes her with a luxury apartment. When Ferguson dies, he bequeaths Marion half a million dollars, and to protect her child, she sends for Jack, who is married to an invalid. Learning that there is a male heir by his son's first wife, Merrick, Sr. threatens to obtain custody of the child. Marion surrenders him willingly, however, when Jack's wife offers to divorce him.
