SYNOPSIS

In a prologue, the wealthy Count de Carnay promises his dying life-long friend that he will bring up his son Pierre as his own. Fifteen years later, the count adopts his seventeen-year-old niece Bella. Pierre, now an officer, and Bella fall in love and secretly become engaged. After the count marries seductress Renee Delacroix, Pierre, returning from duty, succumbs to Renee's advances without knowing who she is and remains her lover even after he learns the truth, although he is remorseful. When the suspicious count finds them together, Bella, to protect the count from pain, becomes Pierre's wife "in name only." After Pierre refuses to see Renee while the count is alive, she attempts to poison the count, but he sees her preparations in a mirror and switches cups. Meanwhile, Pierre, who has been rebuked by the count, shoots himself. After she drinks the poison, the count denounces Renee and chokes her. He drags her up a flight of stairs and throws her body across ... +
