SYNOPSIS

After returning from a trip West with her father, Ruth McAllister behaves strangely toward her lover, John Gilbert, rejecting his marriage proposal without an explanation. A stranger then calls on the family and insists on talking with Ruth, making John furious with jealousy. Ruth's father, a professor and expert hypnotist, intercedes and engages the stranger, Paul Duncan, in probing conversation. At the appearance of the butler, Duncan is visibly disturbed, a fact that leads the professor to encourage his guest to stay and linger in the library, where he is found dead a few hours later, a green tassle clutched in his hand. Because the tassle is part of Ruth's green cloak, she is arrested for Duncan's murder, but her father hypnotizes the maid and unravels the truth. A tattoo similar to one on the maid's arm is discovered on the corpse's arm, and the maid confesses to belonging to the same Denver gang as the dead man. Duncan, who had married and then deserted Ruth, double-crossed the gang, and the butler and maid were sent to kill him. Cleared of all charges, Ruth returns home to marry ... +
