On Dangerous Paths opened 23 Jul 1915 to mixed critical notices. Although the 17 Jul 1915 Motion Picture News endorsed the film, the 30 Jul 1915 Var claimed that the storyline was incongruous, and the 10 Jul 1915 Moving Picture World denounced the female protagonist as “a weak and vacillating creature, with little conscience.” Two months later, however, the 11 Sep 1915 Moving Picture World applauded the absence of rapid onscreen action as a step forward in the evolution of cinema, and commended lead actress Viola Dana for her performance.

Influenced by her successfully employed sister, Eleanor Thurston, the daughter of a country minister, refuses Roger Sterritt's marriage proposal and leaves for New York City to find her fortune. Eleanor enters a career in nursing and works at a hospital, where Dr. Sinclair, a handsome young intern, rescues her from a violent mental patient. Sometime later, Roger arrives in the city on business. That night, he becomes inebriated and is taken to the hospital by Dr. Sinclair. Eleanor sees him the next morning and again refuses his proposal, declaring her love for the doctor. Roger encounters the couple in a restaurant and has a private conversation with the doctor, revealing his devotion to Eleanor.
