SYNOPSIS

In seventeenth century France, King Louis XIII and his favorite, Count de Barados, both love Julie de Mortemar, the ward of Cardinal Richelieu. Julie, however, loves Adrian de Mauprat. The cardinal consents to their marriage, but Barados convinces the king to annul it and command Julie to return to court. Barados is in league with Gaston, the Duke of Orleans, who plans to dethrone Louis and assassinate Richelieu. Barados turns Mauprat against the cardinal and urges him to kill him, but on the night of the proposed assassination Richelieu convinces Mauprat of Barados' treachery. They trick Barados and the conspirators into thinking that the murder has taken place already, and Richelieu is able to obtain a list of the conspirators' names to present to the king who rewards the cardinal and Mauprat for their ... +
