SYNOPSIS

When Raveau, a gentleman crook, meets Babette, the jailer's daughter, at old Castle La Fouche, Babette's sweetness so captivates him that, determined once more to be an honorable man, he proposes and is accepted by the girl. At the nuptial dance, Guinard, a detective who has been trailing Raveau for years, recognizes the criminal and only through the clever ruse of pretending that he wants to elude the guests does Raveau escape with his bride. They go to live in the city where Raveau takes up his former profession of painting. Unsuccessful in selling his work, Raveau turns to gambling, where he profits handsomely, while also saving a strange woman from suicide by restoring her losses to her. Finally, his money gone, and spurred by the knowledge that Babette is pregnant, Raveau steals from a stranger. Just as his arrest seems certain, the stranger turns out to be the husband of the woman that Raveau saved from suicide, who not only refuses to identify the crook, but enables Raveau to return home with money to tide him over until his painting makes him ... +
