SYNOPSIS

Senator Jim Blake and his son-in-law, Senator Mark Robertson, the leaders of a political machine, hire a detective to investigate Senator Matthew Standish, a popular reform legislator who is trying to defeat their bill, which favors the railroads. The detective bribes Standish's former secretary and learns that seven years earlier Standish spent a night in a Maine hotel with a woman from a good family, whom he did not marry. The politicians endeavor to learn the woman's name, but after Standish calls her to warn her, the telephone operator, Wanda Kelly, refuses Blake's bribe to reveal the woman's number. After Wanda learns that the woman is Blake's daughter and Robertson's wife Grace, she destroys her records and is threatened with arrest. Grace sees her suffering and confesses.
