SYNOPSIS

Irving Lawrence, a wealthy slumlord, cheats on Barbara, his wife, and ignores the protests of Schuyler, his conscientious brother, who decries the deplorable condition of Irving's tenements. Barbara deduces from their many secret meetings that Irving and Muriel are intimate and accuses her husband of infidelity. In turn, Irving accuses Barbara of having an affair with his brother. During a party that Barbara and her young son Harry throw for the tenement children, a devastating fire breaks out, the danger from which is exacerbated by the rusty condition of the fire escapes. Irving, believing that Harry is still inside the burning building, rushes back inside and dies needlessly in a fire caused by his own negligence.
