SYNOPSIS

Venetian gondolier Pietro "Beppo" Donetti loves Annette Ancello, but Trudo, her father, prefers the wealthy merchant Roberto Gallia. After Trudo allows Beppo one year to make good, Beppo goes to New York and succeeds as a bootblack. Soon Annette comes and they marry. When their baby becomes ill during a heat wave, the doctor warns that he must have pasteurized milk. After Beppo is robbed of the money saved for the expensive milk and arrested for fighting his attackers, he appeals to the ward boss Corrigan that his baby's life is endangered. Corrigan rebuffs him, and Beppo is jailed for five days, while his baby dies. Vowing vengeance, Beppo soon learns that Corrigan's baby is ill. After entering Corrigan's house, Beppo overhears a doctor say that any sudden noise will kill the child. When he is about to break a glass shade, Beppo sees the baby make the same gesture his son did. Overcome with remorse, Beppo mourns at his baby's ... +
