Cannon Films, inc.A 19 Nov 1985 brief in HR stated that screenwriter James R. Silke was finalizing his script for The Barbarians, and was scouting locations with Serbian director Slobodan Šijan. However, the 16 Jul 1986 issue of Var stated that Sijan had been replaced by director Ruggero Deodato.
Principal photography began 4 Aug 1986 in Rome, Italy, according to the 8 Aug 1986 Var. On 11 Aug 1986, production moved to locations in the Abruzzi Mountains of central Italy, as stated in the 16 Aug 1986 Screen International. The $2.5 million project was planned for an eight-week shooting schedule, noted the 27 Aug 1986 issue of DV, while DV production charts on 22 Oct 1986 stated that filming had recently been completed. DV incorrectly listed “Lynch” as the last name of twin brothers David and Peter Paul, better known to U.S. audiences as the Barbarian Brothers. “Lynch” was the last name of the film’s other above the-title-star, Richard Lynch, who played the film’s villain, “Kadar.” Despite the DV report that filming was finished in Oct 1986, a Feb 1987 issue of Box stated that production had “recently completed.”
The film opened on eighty-nine screens on 15 May 1987, earning $238,842 during its opening weekend, according to box office charts in the 20 May 1987 DV. ...

In a barren wasteland, where the sword is the mightiest weapon, the gypsy-like tribe known as the “Ragnicks” possess a sacred stone: a ruby that contains the secrets of music, laughter, and human kindness. Because of the ruby, the Ragnicks have become known as the world’s storytellers, jugglers, and musicians, and therefore have safe passage throughout the land. As the Ragnick wagon train caravan travels across a plain, an army tries to ambush them, but the Ragnicks attempt to outrun their pursuers. Realizing they cannot escape, the queen of the Ragnicks, Canary, gives the sacred ruby to one of her men, telling him to hide the jewel. He jumps off the wagon and escapes the army’s capture. With their wagons surrounded, Canary tells the army leader, Kadar, to move aside since they have the right of free passage. However, Kadar wants them to surrender and has several of the Ragnicks killed. Two twin Ragnick boys, Gore and Kutchek, attack Kadar, biting off two fingers on Kadar’s right hand. Kadar orders the boys killed, but Canary pleads for their lives and agrees to surrender. Once at Kadar’s fortress, the evil leader tells the army they can have the Ragnick women, but Canary will be added to his harem. The sorceress, China, burns Kadar’s detached fingers and blows the ashes over the boys. She orders the twins killed, but Kadar stops her, saying he promised Canary they would not be harmed. The brothers are instead separated and thrown into a prison known as the “Pit.” There, the “Dirtmaster” who controls the prison, tortures and whips the boys. A dozen years later, the boys have grown into gladiators. ...

Although they have been chained and tortured routinely, both men remain fiercely rebellious. However, each has been informed the other brother is dead. All the while, Kadar keeps Canary encaged in his harem room. The sorceress, China, foretells trouble in the land and insists the time has come for Gore and Kutchek to die. With masks covering their faces, the twins battle each other in the arena. When Kutchek’s mask accidently falls off, Gore recognizes his own likeness. The men realize their twin is not dead after all. They battle Kadar’s guards, escape the fortress, and steal horses to get away. Traveling many miles through the wilderness into a forest, they find the encampment of the remaining Ragnicks. There, they discover a young woman, Ismene, trapped in a cage. When the Ragnicks capture the brothers in a net, Gore and Kutchek announce they are the twins taken from the clan years ago. However, the tribesmen do not believe the story until they see the Ragnick tattoo on the back of their necks. Although Gore and Kutchek wish to rescue Canary, they have no weapons, so Ismene offers to help if they release her from the cage. Once freed, Ismene takes the brothers to the Bucket of Blood tavern, where Gore engages in an arm wrestling match to acquire weapons. When Gore wins the match, a fight ensues. The twins escape safely, but without any armaments. Ismene shows them to a secret tunnel which will lead to Kadar’s palace. At the other end of the tunnel, they find Canary, locked in a cage. She instructs them to go to the forbidden land of Lime Tree to regain the ruby. She declares ruby’s magic will revive the Ragnick tribe. However, a dragon guards Lime Tree, so Canary instructs them to find sacred weapons at the tomb of an ancient king. Outside the fortress, Ismene has horses waiting and the three ride to a waterfall cascading in front of the entrance to a cave holding the tomb and the sacred weapons. They are attacked by creatures guarding the tomb, but defeat them with the sacred weapons. At Kadar’s castle, China orders Canary whipped to learn the ruby’s whereabouts, but Canary refuses to reveal its location. However, China announces she already knows where it is and sets out to retrieve it. In a swampy area, China sees the red ruby glowing on a statue of a serpent. As she takes the ruby, swamp creatures attack her henchmen. The dragon appears and pursues China, swallowing her alive. When the brothers arrive at the swamp, they are also attacked by swamp creatures, but easily defeat them. Just then, the dragon appears out of the water and attacks, but the brothers kill it using the sacred weapons. They then climb inside the belly of the dead dragon and discover the dead body of China with the ruby in her hand. The twins give the ruby to Ismene for safekeeping and send her back to the Ragnicks. Meanwhile, Canary tells Kadar that the power of the ruby will blind and confuse a serpent. Kadar begins to see multiple images of Canary. Confused, he stabs wildly in Canary’s direction, his sword going through her heart. Canary dies in Kadar’s arms. When Ismene arrives at the Ragnick camp, the ruby has been transformed into a stone. The Ragnicks realize their queen is dead. When the ruby begins to glow again, the Ragnicks interpret it as a sign they can choose another queen. They line up the virgins of the tribe, but the ruby does not fit the navel of any of the girls. However, when they try the ruby in Ismene’s belly button, it is a perfect fit and begins glowing again. As they pronounce her queen, she announces she is Kara, the girl stolen from the tribe at the same time the twins were imprisoned. As evidence, she shows them the tribal tattoo on the back of her neck. Elsewhere, the brothers arrive in a canyon with the sacred weapons and fight Kadar, who stabs each in the stomach. The brothers throw spears at Kadar, killing him. The twins then return to the Ragnick camp where they are reunited with Kara, their new queen.
