HISTORY

A “Charles Dickens” character, played by the Muppet, the Great Gonzo, is interspersed throughout the film to narrate the story and is accompanied by a chatty Muppet sidekick, Rizzo the Rat.
The dedication, “In loving memory of Jim Henson and Richard Hunt,” appears prior to opening credits. The Muppet Christmas Carol was the fourth film in the Muppet series, but the first one since the death of Muppet founder-performer-filmmaker, Jim Henson, in 1990. Richard Hunt, who died two years later, was one of the regular Muppet puppeteers and performed in the three previous features, The Muppet Movie (1979), The Great Muppet Caper (1981), and The Muppets Take Manhatten (1984, see entries).
According to production notes in AMPAS library files, Jim Henson considered adapting Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol for the Muppets prior to his death. When his eldest son, Brian Henson, became president of Jim Henson Productions in 1990, he revisited the idea of merging the darkness in Dickens’ story with the Muppets’ unique irreverent humor, as explained in a 18 Dec 1992 Screen International article. The $13-million production marked the first time the Muppets played characters other than themselves. The film also represented twenty-eight-year-old Brian Henson’s feature debut as a director and a producer.
The nine weeks of principal photography began 11 Jun 1992 at Shepperton Studios, outside London, England. According to a 14 Aug 1992 Screen International item, the picture had the advantage of being the first Muppet feature to use optical effects to digitally erase puppeteers from shots.

The 23 Feb 1993 DV reported that The Muppet Christmas Carol tied with Aladdin (1992, see entry) for Best Picture at the International Angel Awards, which recognized media with a “‘high moral or social impact.’”
End credits include the acknowledgements: “Special thanks to: Ellis Flyte, Alex Rockwell and David Lazer”; and the statement: “Made at Shepperton Studios, Shepperton, London, England.” More Less

SYNOPSIS

In nineteenth century London, England, heartless moneylender Ebenezer Scrooge is the most unpopular man in town. On the day before Christmas, he has no interest in celebrating a holiday that he greedily anticipates will be “foreclosure season,” as people spend on frivolities instead of paying their mortgages. Scrooge must be convinced to give his staff Christmas Day off, and refuses to donate when charity workers stop by the office. After turning down his nephew Fred’s invitation to Christmas Eve dinner, the surly businessman goes home alone. During the night, the ghosts of brothers Jacob and Robert Marley, Scrooge’s long dead business partners, taunt him and reveal he is destined to be chained in the afterlife as they are, unless he changes his miserly ways. The Marleys forewarn of three ghosts who will haunt Scrooge that night, representing his only hope for salvation. Although shaken, Scrooge tries to disregard the threat and goes to bed. At 1:00 a.m., the Ghost of Christmas Past, resembling a young girl, awakens him. The apparition escorts Scrooge back to his childhood, reminding him of when he studied alone in the classroom on Christmas, and takes him to the site of his first job at Fozziwig’s rubber chicken factory. During the company’s festive Christmas party, young Scrooge meets a woman named Belle and falls in love, but a few years later she leaves him because of his preoccupation with money. Scrooge becomes tearful watching the painful memories, and no longer wants to revisit his past. Back in his bedroom, the businessman tries to rest, but anxiously awaits his next ghostly visitor. After the clock strikes the hour, a cheerful, large man introduces himself as the Ghost of Christmas Present. Feeling more hopeful about this spirit, Scrooge asks to see nephew Fred, his only living relative. The Ghost of Christmas Present allows Scrooge to observe the celebration underway at Fred’s home, where guests play a parlor game. However, Scrooge is devastated when Fred ridicules his uncle as part of the game and calls him an “an unwanted creature.” The businessman begs the spirit to remove him from the scene. Next, Scrooge is taken to the impoverished home of Bob Cratchit, his most devoted employee and watches as the Cratchit family enjoys a simple meal with their four children. In honor of the holiday, Bob offers a toast to his boss, despite protests from his wife Emily. Scrooge is particularly touched by the optimism of the Cratchits’ ailing son, Tiny Tim, whom the spirit predicts will die before next Christmas. At a cemetery, the Ghost of Christmas Present leaves Scrooge to make way for the faceless Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come, who guides Scrooge to the future. There, Scrooge observes as townsfolk celebrate the recent death of a “wretched” man and sell his belongings. At Bob Cratchit’s house, Scrooge is saddened to learn that Tiny Tim has also died and watches the grieving Cratchit family spend their first Christmas without him. Back at the cemetery, the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come reveals the grave of the wretched man belongs to Ebenezer Scrooge himself, and the businessman begs the spirit for a chance to redeem himself. When Scrooge finds himself alive and well at home on Christmas Day, he praises the Marley brothers and the three spirits. After donating money to charity workers, he delivers presents to his nephew and others around town. On his final stop, Scrooge surprises the Cratchit family with a turkey dinner and announces he is raising Bob’s salary and will pay the mortgage on his house. The Cratchits welcome the former miser into their home to celebrate the holiday, and thanks to Scrooge’s generosity and friendship over the years, Tiny Tim survives. +
