SYNOPSIS

Howard Helms, his wife Mary and their young son Bumpkins regretfully leave the slumbering town of Pepperell and take up a new life in New York, where Howard has been offered a lucrative job by Mills, a financier. Soon Howard learns the ways of the city and becomes enamored of adventuress Clarice Phillips, causing Mary much unhappiness. Mills, who is Mary's devoted friend, learns of this state of affairs and forces Howard to lose all his money. Meanwhile, Mary appeals to Clarice's maternal spark, and pleads with her to leave Howard for the sake of their child Bumpkin. Clarice, though truly in love with Howard, sends him from her. This reunites the Helm family and they return to Pepperell, wiser but ... +
