Wandering away from the excitement of a party and stage play given at her house in honor of her fifth birthday, Little Mary falls into the hands of gypsies. When she overhears their chief discuss a ransom demand, Mary escapes into the woods in the still of the night. The next morning, she discovers an old cabin where she meets elderly James Andrews, who, years earlier, hid himself and all his wealth in this uninhabited woodland after a quarrel with his son. The next day, when the distraught chauffeur whose negligence had been responsible for Mary's disappearance arrives, Andrews realizes that Mary is his son's daughter and decides to accompany her home. Thus, the old man and child return to the Andrews home where the whole family is reunited.
