In 1932, M-G-M made The Passionate Plumber, which was based on Her Cardboard Lover, itself a 1927 English-language adaptation of the Jacques Deval play by Valerie Wyngate and P. G. Wodehouse. The 1932 film was directed by Edward Sedgwick and starred Buster Keaton, Jimmy Durante and Polly Moran. A 1942 M-G-M release, entitled Her Cardboard Lover (see entry), was based on the same plays. That version was directed by George Cukor and starred Norma Shearer and Robert Taylor.
A print of The Cardboard Lover is extant in the Library of Congress. In 2025 a digital project was underway to restore it.

Sally, an American autograph hound grand-touring Europe with some schoolmates, sets her cap for André, a French tennis champion. She discovers that André's sweetheart, Simone, is not on the level; and André, who is unfortunately infatuated with that undulating French coquette, hires Sally to keep him apart from Simone.
