SYNOPSIS

Michael Banning, a U.S. Army lieutenant sent to Southern California to investigate lawless land-grabbing, wins a golden bridle in a riding contest sponsored by Carmelita, daughter of Spanish grandee Don Manuel. He thus incurs the enmity of Ramírez, who is in love with her; the Mexican attempts to steal the bridle, but Banning subdues him. Maddux, leader of a gang that plans to steal Don Manuel's land, sends a spy to follow Banning, who returns from San José with the news that California has been admitted to the Union; Maddux then has him jailed.
