A 20 May 1964 Var news brief noted that the hosts of nine regional Three Stooges television programs would be featured as legendary gunfighters. Comprising the group was Joe Bolton of New York City; Sally Starr of Philadelphia, PA; Paul Shannon of Pittsburgh, PA; Bruce Sedley of San Francisco, CA; Bill Camfield of Fort Worth, TX; Hal Fryar of Indianapolis, IN; Johnny Ginger of Detroit, MI; Wayne Mack of New Orleans, LA; and Ed T. McDonnell of Boston, MA. Also appearing in the film was actor and television personality Don Lamond, son-in-law of Larry Fine.
The 25 Nov 1964 Var announced the 13 Jan 1965 world premiere at the Texas Theatre in San Antonio, TX. The Three Stooges were scheduled for a personal appearance at Frontier Town in nearby Bandera, TX. The event would also include “the world’s largest pie throwing contest, a parade, a fast-draw duel, a mock hanging and tables full of Western chow.” The film was re-titled The Outlaws IS Coming, which, according to various sources, was a parody of “The Birds Is Coming,” the promotional slogan for Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds (1963, see entry). The publisher of Boston's wildlife magazine assigns his editor Kenneth Cabot, along with the Three Stooges, who have been bungling their work in the magazine's pressroom, to go out West and halt the slaughter of buffalo. There they encounter every gunslinger, from Wild Bill Hickok to Jesse James and Billy The Kid, as they inadvertently hamper the gang leaders' plans. Annie Oakley saves them with her many trick gunshots. The gang leaders are exposed; the Three Stooges persuade them to mend their ways; and Annie asks Kenneth to marry ...
