According to a 5 May 1925 article in the Examiner of Launceston, Tasmania, Australia, Butterfly was based on a novel by Kathleen Norris, which was first distributed in 1923 as a serial in the Pictorial Review before its publication in 1924.
       A 19 Apr 1924 Exhibitors Herald news story listed Butterfly as one of nine Universal Pictures projects that had begun filming within the past two weeks. The 7 May 1924 Var reported that Regal Pictures agreed to loan out contract player Margaret Livingston to Universal for the production.
       The picture had its world premiere on 25 Jul 1924, at the recently opened Forum Theatre in Los Angeles, CA. According to the 9 Aug 1924 Exhibitors Trade Review, the event attracted large crowds such that hundreds of filmgoers were turned away.
