An English adaption of Ladislaus Fodor's play, entitled A Church Mouse, by Frederic and Fanny Hatton was presented by William A. Brady and opened in New York on 12 Oct 1931. According to Var, Paul Frank was a co-author of the Hungarian play. An English language adaptation of the play by Benn Levy , also entitled A Church Mouse, opened in London in early May 1931. The play was made into a German film Arm wie eine Kirchenmaus in 1931, directed by Richard Oswald. First National remade the story in 1935 as The Church Mouse (see entry). ...

SYNOPSIS

International Viennese banker Baron Josef von Ullrich believes that beautiful women have no place in an office. Their proper place, according to the baron, is entertaining men in the evening. For this reason, he fires his attractive secretary, Polly Frey, but promises to continue his relationship with her after hours. He vows to avoid business women until plainly dressed Susie Sachs impresses him with her efficiency. He hires her on the spot, and she organizes his affairs and protects him from distractions, including a long list of women, because she has fallen in love with him. When the baron and his retinue are in Paris completing a business merger, he discovers that Susie has been keeping Polly away from him and, as punishment, he makes her deliver a box of flowers to her room. Polly advises Susie to be more womanly, demonstrating some flirtation techniques. Susie takes her advice to heart, and that evening when the baron's brother Paul and his friend, the Count, arrive to take her out for the evening, she is transformed. The baron cannot believe his eyes, but he is not able to escort Susie himself, as she has arranged a full schedule of appointments for him. She flirts with the Count and with Paul and then runs back to the baron. She tells him that she is hungry for life and he fires her. Distraught, she plans to leave, but before she can, the baron asks her to take one last dictation for him. He proposes marriage in the memo and Susie happily ...
