Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Corp.Referring to the film by its working title, Like Kelly Can, the 1 Jun 1930 FD announced that the forthcoming Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Corp. (M-G-M) release had recently begun principal photography. The musical was based on the 1925 play, Spring Fever, by Vincent Lawrence. In 1927, M-G-M released a silent adaptation with musical interludes, titled Spring Fever, starring William Haines and Joan Crawford, and directed by Edward Sedgwick (see entry).
Tom McGuire, The Baltimore Trio, Earl "Snake Hips" Tucker, and Wilber Mack were added to the cast, according to FD, and the 21 Jun 1930 and 28 Jun 1930 issues of Hollywood Filmograph.
The Sep 1930 Screenland reported that location filming took place at Lake Norconian Club in Norco, CA, east of Los Angeles, CA, where golf course sequences were shot.
Hollywood Filmograph indicated that director Charles F. Riesner was nearly finished filming on 21 Jun 1930. About one month later, the title change to Love in the Rough was announced in the 30 Jul 1930 Var.
The 16 Aug 1930 Motion Picture News review listed a 6 Sep 1930 release date. The picture opened in New York City at the Capitol Theatre on 26 Sep 1930, as stated in the 1 Oct 1930 Var review. Both reviews were critical ofLove in the Rough, deeming the 1927 adaptation the superior version. Motion Picture News complained that the remake was "spotty," lacked continuity, and would benefit from editing. ...
