When her boyfriend, Jimmy, forgets a date, Tessie McGuire, a department store clerk, attends a party at the studio of Robert Brandt where she makes a hit with impersonations. There Riccardi offers her a job impersonating a Russian countess in his style emporium. While she is fighting off suitors, Jimmy becomes successful with his automobile invention; but when he returns to find Tessie wealthy in gowns he accuses her of being "manhandled."
