A news item in the 8 Jul 1916 Motion Picture News stated that filming began the previous week at the Morosco-Pallas Pictures studio in Hollywood, CA. On 30 Jul 1916, a [Louisville, KY] Courier-Journal brief noted that filming had just ended. A release date of 2 Oct 1916 was set, although the 14 Oct 1916 Motion Picture News later claimed that the release had been delayed until 9 Oct 1916, when the film was scheduled to premiere at the Strand Theatre in New York City. In the meantime, an advertisement in the 3 Oct 1916 Philadelphia Inquirer announced that The Intrigue would have its first showing that day at the Stanley Theatre. SYNOPSIS

At the request of her government, the Countess Sonia Varnli, disguised as a maid, goes to America to prevent inventor Guy Longstreet from selling his new x-ray gun to the enemy, represented in negotiations by the Baron Rogniat. Guy seems willing to sell the gun to him, but fearing that Guy might decide to sell it to other countries, the baron plots to kill him. When Sonia finds out about the murder plan, she warns Guy, and together they capture the baron. Guy then asks Sonia to marry him, and she consents on the condition that he destroy the plans for the weapon. When Guy agrees, Sonia reveals that she is really a countess, and they begin making plans for a royal ...
