Elsie Graves, the young wife of the cruel and abusive Justus Graves, falls in love with Robert Amory, the gentle widower who lives next door with his son, Ned. Justus discovers his wife in Robert's arms and shoots his rival, then flees to Mexico with his young daughter, Sarita. Years later, Ned Amory, who has grown into a fine young man, accepts a diplomatic position in Mexico City. He is robbed along the way and jailed in a small Mexican settlement. Justus learns of Ned’s situation and convinces a local official to place the young man in his custody. Consumed by his grudge against Robert, Justus treats Ned as a slave, which first arouses Sarita's pity and then her love. She helps Ned escape and together they flee to the U.S. Justus follows, only to find the couple married and safe across the Rio Grande.
