Nancy Lee, the daughter of a poor but aristocratic Virginia family, rejects Anthony Weir because of her parents' objection to his social standing. Instead, she marries wealthy New Yorker George Trevor, a drunkard, who dies, leaving Nancy penniless. Nancy borrows a large sum of money from Anthony's nephew Douglas, who is in love with her. Douglas has actually embezzled the money, and when he is unable to repay it, Anthony, returning from a trip abroad, accuses Nancy of "bleeding" his nephew and demands that Nancy pay back the money.
