Wealthy Walter and Gloria Marvin and their troublesome son Johnny come to stay at the Hotel Coronado in southern California. To keep Johnny out of mischief, the manager asks house bandleader Eddie to give Johnny a part in the band, and asks singer June Wray to perform a song that Johnny wrote. June lives with her poor father Otto, who intensely dislikes her sister Violet's new sailor husband, Chuck Hornbostel, because he was too poor to buy her a ring. Believing Johnny to be poor and starving, June befriends him, buys him a meal, and takes him dancing with Chuck and Vi. Johnny inadvertently wins a talent contest but uses the prize to buy a bracelet for Vi in Chuck's name. After June pleads with the manager Carlton to give Johnny a job in the band, she discovers he is actually from a wealthy family and thinks she has been deceived. Walter visits with Otto and they agree to try to keep their unsuitably paired children apart by exaggerating their differences. That night at the hotel, June and Johnny perform. As part of the plan, Otto becomes drunk and interrupts the show with old vaudeville songs. June is hurt when Johnny laughs at Otto, and runs away saying she acted nice to him only because Carlton ordered her to do so. Later that night, Otto confesses to June his and Walter's plan. Meanwhile, Chuck and his friend Pinky Falls sneak across the Mexican border to buy a cheap wedding ring for Vi, but they get thrown in jail. Johnny impersonates a doctor and gets Chuck released, then rushes to the hotel just in time for his performance in the big music and dance review. Otto is satisfied by the wedding ring, and Johnny and June are reunited.
