This documentary chronicles naturalist Dr. Theodore Walker’s eight-month stay on Alaska’s remote Baranof Island, a northern rain forest in the Peril Strait, northwest of Sitka. After settling into his temporary home—a cabin on Baranof’s mile-long Eva Lake—Walker begins to study the area’s flora and fauna. From the spring thaw to the first snow of autumn, he documents wildlife in and around the lake, filming from both above and below the water’s surface. Animals under Walker’s observation include salmon, trout, salamanders, deer elk, bear, killer whales, seals and eagles. Cyclical events, such as bear hibernation, are recorded. In addition to his technical work, Walker details how living in complete isolation transforms him from a city-bred scientist into a modern outdoorsman. Walker notes that because his basic needs, such as food and shelter, are met, he can immerse himself in the environment and achieve a unique, transcendent harmony with his surroundings. ...
