It is doubtful that The Innerview was released theatrically, although it was screened at the Los Angeles International Film Exposition (Filmex) in Jun 1973 and shown as part of New York's Whitney Museum's New American Filmmakers series in Nov 1973. According to the Nov 1973 NYT review, Richard Beymer, who had starred in West Side Story (see below) and various other commercially successful films, left his screen acting career in 1963 to devote his time to making experimental films.
       In 1964, Beymer produced the award-winning documentary A Regular Bouquet: Mississippi Summer, documenting the effort of volunteers to register to vote. About The Innerview, the Var reviewer wrote: "Any film that opens with several minutes of blank screens and heavy breathing on the soundtrack is going to have an uphill commercial fight." However, the LAT reviewer wrote, "The Innerview is a thoroughly remarkable, dazzlingly complex achievement that must surely rank among the major works of the American avant-garde cinema....Beymer is especially acute in expressing how the movies have shaped our imaginations....Indeed, The Innerview celebrates the miraculous, infinite resources of the cinema itself." ...
