HISTORY

While a 16 Jul 2004 HR news item announced that Warner Bros. Pictures and producer Ed McDonnell’s Maple Shade Films had hired Matthew Sand to adapt Beowulf into a feature film, a 25 Jul 2007 LAT article reported that screenwriters Neil Gaiman and Roger Avary began their adaptation of the Anglo-Saxon poem in 1997 after reading numerous translations. HR stated that Maple Shade’s director of development, Dan Stone, initiated the project, but neither Maple Shade nor Warner Bros. is credited in the film.
According to a 21 Jan 2005 DV article, director Robert Zemeckis’s studio, ImageMovers, optioned Gaiman and Avary’s script in 1997 and hired Avary to direct. However, the project remained in limbo and the rights were returned to the writers when the option expired. Avary spent one year unsuccessfully trying to secure financing independently, and when Zemeckis expressed interest in taking over as director, Shangri-La Entertainment founder Steve Bing, who financed Zemeckis’s The Polar Express (2004, see entry) for $80 million, bought the screen rights for Beowulf with Sony Pictures for $2 million. Avary, who had won an Academy award for co-writing the stories for Pulp Fiction (1994, see entry) with Quentin Tarantino, was reportedly not eager to hand over his directorial role, but Bing insisted that Zemeckis direct. Both Avary and Gaiman were credited as executive producers as well as screenwriters.
Producer Steve Starkey told LAT on 25 Jul 2007 that he and Zemeckis edited the original script’s foul language, excessive violence and nudity to secure a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) but they considered producing an unrated version of the picture in the future.
According to HR, Sony was negotiating for exclusive releasing rights to all Shangri-La productions in Jan 2005 when the script was collaboratively optioned by Shangri-La and Sony, but Sony is not credited in the film. HR also noted that the picture’s preliminary $70 million budget was expected to increase because of its motion-capture technology, a technique that was utilized by Zemeckis in The Polar Express. Various contemporary sources, including LAT articles on 15 and 16 Nov 2007, reported that the budget grew to between $150 and $160 million.
Principal photography began 26 Sep 2005 in Los Angeles, CA, according to HR production charts on 8 Nov 2005. However, the 25 Jul 2007 LAT article, which referred to filming with motion-capture technology as “principal mocapography,” noted that the shoot at The Culver Studios in Culver City, CA, lasted thirty days in Dec 2005. The actors performed in bodysuits that were covered with “tiny sensors”; each marker was recorded by “dozens of digital cameras” and the footage was used to digitally animate the live action. According to a 16 Nov 2007 HR article, Beowulf’s large cast, with its various costume changes and science fiction creatures, required much more extensive utilization of visual effects technology than The Polar Express; thus, the filmmakers relied on recent advances in computer speed and employed over “250 4-megapixel Vicon cameras” as opposed to the “72 1-megapixel cameras” used in The Polar Express. Additionally, a larger “capture” area was built at The Culver Studios, measuring twenty-five feet by twenty-five feet.
As stated in another 16 Nov 2007 HR article, the film was released that day in 3,155 theaters nationwide including one thousand 3-D equipped venues, making it the largest distribution of a 3-D picture in “modern film history" to that time. The article noted that after the success of The Polar Express, companies such as Real D had outfitted 1,100 theaters with 3-D projectors, as well as 120 Image Maximum (IMAX) venues, internationally. Sony Pictures Imageworks reportedly started production of the 3-D version of Beowulf during principal photography, working “in parallel” with the 2-D production team to “create a second eye from the source material.” The two images were converged at Imageworks’ 3-D theater “sweatbox” with Autodesk Maya customized animation software.
As stated in the 16 Nov 2007 LAT article, filmmakers and theater industry insiders were hoping that the release of Beowulf in 3-D would mark an upswing in the dwindling statistics of audience attendance since 2002, a decline that was attributed to the popularity of computer games and home entertainment systems. Although theaters were charged between $30,000 and $50,000 to equip their facilities with 3-D technology and ticket prices were doubled to an average of $15 each to recover the costs, industry specialists argued that the investment would pay off and 3-D films would entice audiences back into theaters. LAT noted that industry insiders pointed to The Polar Express as indicator; the film generated $65 million of its $303 million gross worldwide at IMAX venues alone and was re-released every year to a successful run during the holidays. Beowulf filmmakers hoped that by appealing to a PG-13, “15-to-30-year-old male, techie crowd,” they would secure an even better financial outcome. In an effort to attract this demographic, the film’s release coincided with the 13 Nov 2007 premiere of a “triple-A” video game of the same name, according to a 31 Oct 2007 HR article. Noting the difficulty of releasing a game and a film on nearly the same day, HR stated that production on both projects ran concurrently. Game publisher Ubisoft was hired by Paramount in Oct 2005 and digital assets from the film were shared with Ubisoft throughout principal photography.
The film received mixed reviews; while the 12 Nov 2007 HR stated that the marriage of the narrative with motion capture technology was “brimming with vitality,” the 16 Nov 2007 LAT argued that the effects were “more like a gimmick than an added value.” Still, the picture fared well and topped the box-office charts, grossing $28.1 million in the first three days of its release in the U.S. and Canada, according to a 19 Nov 2007 LAT news item. As reported in a 23 Jun 2008 HR brief, a Nielsen Company PreView study showed that theaters which exhibited the picture in 3-D grossed 65% more than those that did not, and theaters that projected the film in 3-D on more than one screen earned 100% more than their expected gross. Although the statistics reflected the increased price of 3-D tickets, Nielsen concluded that audiences were willing to pay more for enhanced theatrical exhibitions despite their general ignorance about the technology and the location of venues equipped with 3-D projectors.

SYNOPSIS

In 507 A.D. Denmark, King Hrothgar and his beautiful young wife, Queen Wealthow, host a drunken revelry at their new meat hall. Celebrating his recent conquests, Hrothgar bequeaths the hall “Heorot” and throws treasure at his minions. However, the festivities are interrupted by a hideous monster named Grendel, who attacks the guests but leaves Hrothgar and Wealthow unharmed. As Grendel returns to his mother’s cave, Hrothgar orders the survivors to burn the bodies, close the hall and refrain from merriment because noise provokes the monster. Hrothgar then tells his advisor, Unferth, to spread the word that he will pay half of his fortune in gold to a hero who can slay Grendel. Sometime later, the Geat warrior Beowulf and his companion, Wiglaf, command a ship of fourteen soldiers through a storm. As the men heave their vessel onto land, one of Hrothgar’s soldiers holds Beowulf at sword point, but Beowulf proclaims that he and his men have arrived to kill Grendel and free the land of its curse. Arriving at Heorot, Beowulf is embraced by Hrothgar, who remembers Beowulf’s father. When Beowulf demands that his men eat before their battle, Unferth informs him that merriment provokes Grendel, but Hrothgar agrees to reopen the hall in the hope of trapping the monster. Sometime later, Hrothgar shows Beowulf his prized, dragon-shaped drinking horn and points out that dragons have one vulnerable place on their bodies near their hearts; the king promises the horn to Beowulf in return for conquering Grendel. Meanwhile, Beowulf eyes Wealthow and is mesmerized by her song. Stripping off his armor in front of the queen, Beowulf proclaims that he will fight Grendel naked and orders his men to sing so the monster will be lured to the hall. Grendel soon appears; the monster impales Beowulf’s soldiers on their own swords, tears apart their bodies and eats one man alive. Jumping onto Grendel’s back, Beowulf punctures a soft spot near Grendel’s ear and causes the monster to shrink. As Grendel escapes in defeat, Beowulf slams the hall door on the monster’s arm, but the disembodied limb grabs Beowulf’s ankle. Raising Grendel’s arm into the air, Wiglaf announces that Beowulf has slain the beast. Hrothgar rejoices in his chamber and commands Wealthow to join him in bed so they can conceive an heir, but Wealthow refuses, reproaching Hrothgar for once having an affair. As Grendel returns to his mother’s cave and dies in her arms, Beowulf holds a funeral ceremony for his fallen soldiers and Wealthow presents the hero with Hrothgar’s horn. That night, Grendel’s mother flies to Heorot for revenge and hangs Beowulf’s surviving men from the rafters while Beowulf dreams that Wealthow is seducing him. Later, Hrothgar tells Beowulf that Grendel’s mother is responsible for the killings, but he presumed that she had left the kingdom long ago. Although Beowulf inquires about Grendel’s paternity, Hrothgar insists that the father is not an enemy. After venturing to Grendel’s cave with Wiglaf, Beowulf enters alone, using Hrothgar’s horn to illuminate the path, and discovers a stockpile of treasure. Grendel’s mother, who appears as a beautiful, naked woman, seduces Beowulf into an agreement: she will make him king in return for being impregnated with another son and for possession of Hrothgar’s horn. Sometime later, Beowulf returns to Heorot with Grendel’s head, falsely proclaiming that he killed Grendel’s mother. At a celebration, Wealthow questions the whereabouts of her husband’s horn and Hrothgar is skeptical of Beowulf’s story. In private, the king tells Beowulf that he once knew Grendel’s mother, but he is now relieved that she is no longer his curse. After declaring Beowulf heir to the kingdom, Hrothgar commits suicide by plunging from the tower. Years later, Beowulf returns home from battle to an adoring mistress, Ursula, and a reproachful wife, Wealthow. At the annual celebration of Grendel’s slaying, Unferth presents Beowulf with Hrothgar’s horn, explaining that his slave found it on the moors. That evening, a dragon sets fire to a nearby village and Unferth survives to give Beowulf a message from the beast: the king’s accord with Grendel’s mother has ended because the horn was returned. Unferth reports that the dragon uttered “the sins of the fathers” as it killed his family. Before returning to Grendel’s mother’s cave to settle the dispute, Beowulf confesses to Wealthow that he made love to Grendel’s mother, but he claims that he always loved the queen. Back at the cave, Beowulf throws the horn at Grendel’s mother, but she refuses to leave his kingdom in peace and transforms into a dragon. As Beowulf and Wiglaf chase after the monster, Beowulf throws his ax into its flesh and hangs beneath it from a rope as it flies to Heorot. Looking up, Beowulf notices a vulnerable spot at the dragon’s chest, then cuts himself loose as soldiers attack from below. When the dragon momentarily falters, Beowulf jumps on it again and hangs onto its back with his dagger. After plunging through the ocean, the dragon resurfaces and goes after Ursula and Wealthow in the castle tower, but Beowulf restrains the beast with a chain and plunges his dagger into its vulnerable spot, releasing a torrent of liquid fire. Hanging from the chain, Beowulf attempts to reach through the hole to stab the dragon’s heart, but he cannot make contact and severs his arm to the bone so he can get closer. Beowulf drops his dagger inside the dragon’s neck. With the lives of his loved ones at stake, Beowulf reaches through the dragon’s neck and tears out its heart with his bare hand. Both Beowulf and the dragon fall to the beach below the castle. As Beowulf comes to, he sees the dragon transform into the human incarnation of his son and reaches toward the young man. Wiglaf stands over Beowulf, encouraging his friend to stay alive by reminding him of his heroism, but Beowulf confesses that his valor was a myth and dies. Sometime later, Beowulf is cast out to sea in his warship and ignited into flames. Wiglaf, who is wearing the king’s crown, eulogizes that Beowulf was “the prince of all warriors” and Wealthow says that Beowulf will be remembered in a song. As the funerary ship burns, Grendel’s mother rises from the ocean and kisses Beowulf’s corpse. The king’s gold horn washes up on the beach at Wiglaf’s feet. The ship disappears into the ocean, but Wiglaf sees the beautiful woman floating in the water and wades out toward her, cradling the horn. +
