       An 8 Aug 1984 Var news item announced that director-producer Richard Donner and executive producer Steven Spielberg contracted with Warner Bros., Inc. to make The Goonies, which was set to begin production in Fall 1984. According to Var, Spielberg originated the story of the film and hired Chris Columbus, who wrote the screenplay for Spielberg’s hit feature Gremlins (1984, see entry), released earlier that year, to develop the script. However, Warner Bros. executives stressed that The Goonies was not a sequel to Gremlins. The film was scheduled for a Feb or Mar 1985 release.
       According to HR production charts on 18 Dec 1984, principal photography began 22 Oct 1984 with shooting scheduled for Oregon and Los Angeles, CA. A 14 Nov 1984 HR news item noted that shooting was moved to Astoria, OR. As stated in a Dec 1985 issue of AmCin, sets and models for the pirate cavern and ship were constructed at The Burbank Studios in Burbank, CA.
       On 11 Jun 1985, LAHExam reported that the film grossed $9.1 million at 1,705 theaters in its opening weekend. Although Warner Bros. was pleased with the results, the studio was hoping the film would gain a larger audience and planned two new advertising campaigns.

The organizations stated that they did not endorse censorship, but rather wanted to meet with Warner Bros. executives to alert them to the “damaging effects” of portraying Italian-Americans as “either criminals or buffoons” such as the characters in The Goonies’ “Fratelli Gang.”
       The film was released to generally positive reviews. On 5 Jun 1985, Var noted The Goonies was as enjoyable as a “roller coaster ride,” but added the film “becomes painfully syrupy.” Although the picture was widely compared to Spielberg’s Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom (1984, see entry), Var stated that The Goonies “toned down the earlier film’s much criticized violence,” noting that the villains were “more comical than threatening.”
       The Goonies marked the feature film debut of actors Josh Brolin, Sean Astin, Jeff Cohen and Kerri Green.
       The name of the film’s supervisor of visual effects, Michael McAlister, was misspelled “Micheal” in the end credits.
       The end credits include the following written statement: “Thanks and much love to the people of Astoria and Cannon Beach, Oregon, Bodega Bay, California and the Oregon State Film Commission.” Also included in the end credits are the following acknowledgements: “Craig Claiborne’s New York Times Video Cookbook courtesy of The New York Times Productions; 'Pirates of the Spanish Main' courtesy of American Heritage Publishing Company; 'Boston Lighthouse' courtesy of the Mariners’ Museum, Newport News, Va.; ‘So the Treasure was Divided’ provided by The Delaware Art Museum, Howard Pyle Collection; Pirate Coin Photos courtesy of Bermuda News Bureau.”

SYNOPSIS

Feigning suicide, outlaw Jake Fratelli breaks out of jail with the assistance of his mother, Mama Fratelli and brother, Francis, and the gang is chased by police through the coastal town of Astoria, Oregon. Elsewhere in Astoria, brothers Mikey and Brand Walsh are visited by their friend Mouth. The Walsh family home was recently foreclosed upon, and Mouth encourages the brothers to enjoy their remaining days in the “goon docks” neighborhood with their band of friends, the Goonies. Chunk, a member of the gang, arrives to tell his friends about the police chase, but they don’t believe him, and another Goonie, Data, careens through the front screen door on a zip line. When Mrs. Walsh returns home with her new housekeeper, Rosalita, who has been hired to help with the move, Mouth offers to translate her instructions into Spanish, but the prankster falsely represents Mrs. Walsh’s statements. When the ladies leave for the market, Mrs. Walsh orders Brand to look out for his younger brother and forbids Mikey from going outside because of his asthma. Alone in the house, the boys race to the attic, which Mrs. Walsh deemed off-limits, and find a collection of pirate artifacts. When Mikey discovers a treasure map and a doubloon dated 1632, he tells the boys about One-Eyed Willy, a pirate who was buried alive in a cave with his ship, The Inferno, after being pursued by a British armada. Outside, a country club developer named Mr. Perkins delivers foreclosure papers to the Walsh brothers and demands their father’s signature by the following morning. Fearing the entire neighborhood will be razed by Perkins to build a golf course, the Goonies decide to follow Mikey’s suggestion and look for the treasure. After restraining Brand and releasing air from his bike’s tires, the boys ride away with the map and when Mrs. Walsh arrives home to find Mikey missing, she orders Brand to go after them. Brand takes a bike from the little girl next door and as he struggles to keep up with the Goonies, he is humiliated to see Andy, the girl he desires, with her jock boyfriend Troy and best friend Stef. Meanwhile, Mikey matches three holes in the doubloon to a location on the coastline and determines that the treasure must be in vicinity of a nearby restaurant. As they approach the ramshackle building, the Goonies notice two businessmen and hear gunshots. Inside, they boys are detained by the Fratellis. Mikey insists that he needs the toilet, and as he creeps downstairs to search for an opening to Willy’s cave, he encounters a deformed giant, chained to a chair. Racing outside in horror, Mikey is reunited with the Goonies and Brand, and the boys observe the Fratellis move a body bag into their car. As the Fratelli gang drives away, the boys are surprised to see Andy and Stef, who have ditched Troy to look for Brand. The kids return to the Fratelli hideout and discover an entrance to Willy’s cave. Chunk, who is delighted to find ice cream in a freezer, unwittingly uncovers the corpse of one of the businessmen. Just then, the Fratelli gang returns to their hideout and the Goonies escape through the passageway. Stuck in the freezer, Chunk is soon captured by the Fratellis and confesses that his friends are searching for treasure underneath the building. Meanwhile, inside the cave, the Goonies discover the skeleton of Copperpot, who was killed by one of Willy’s booby traps. As Data takes the explorer’s dynamite sticks, Mikey finds a stone key around Copperpot’s neck. After placing the amulet over his head, Mikey triggers a booby trap and the Goonies are trapped by falling boulders. Brand notices a way out, but he releases a colony of bats that fly through the passageway and alert the Fratelli gang to the entrance of the cave. The Goonies come upon a waterfall filled with coins, but the currency is modern and the kids realize they are inside a wishing well. Above ground, Troy tosses a coin into the well, gloating to his friends that he will soon “make it with Andy,” and the boys are astonished to hear Andy’s voice inside, calling for help. Although Troy provides an opportunity for escape, Mikey convinces the gang to continue their quest to save the goon docks. Back at the Fratelli’s hideout, Chunk is detained in the giant’s dungeon and the Fratellis go after the Goonies. When Chunk offers the giant a candy bar, the monster breaks out of his chains and befriends the boy, introducing himself as Sloth, another member of the Fratelli clan. Chunk calls the police, but the officer does not believe his story, so Chunk and Sloth proceed into the cave to rescue the Goonies, themselves. Discovering a door that fits Copperpot’s key, Mikey unleashes another booby trap that sends Data plummeting down a hole, but he is saved by one of his gadgets. As the Fratelli gang catches up with them, the Goonies come upon a piano organ made from skeletons. Translating the map, Mouth instructs Andy to play the music notated on the document, but for every incorrect chord she hits, the ground crumbles beneath their feet. As a draw bridge lowers, the Goonies get away from the Fratellis and plunge through enormous water slides that open into an underground lake that holds The Inferno. Boarding One-Eyed Willy’s pirate ship, the kids are discouraged by their failure to find gold, but Mikey discovers a hidden chamber, filled with riches, which is presided over by Willy’s skeleton. As the kids fill their pockets, they are captured by the Fratellis and forced to walk the plank until Sloth and Chunk come to the rescue. The Goonies jump into the water and Andy and Brand kiss. Meanwhile, Sloth ties his brothers to the mast, and although Mama tries to console her deformed son, Sloth remembers that she dropped him as a child and throws her into the water. Climbing back aboard the ship, Mama frees Jake and Francis, but when they go after Willy’s loot, a booby trap is triggered. Meanwhile, the Goonies light Copperpot’s dynamite sticks, which they mistake for candles, and the cave begins to collapse. When a boulder falls in front of their escape route, Sloth lifts the rock and the Goonies crawl to safety. On the beach, the Goonies are discovered by police and reunited with their parents. The Fratellis escape the cave, only to be arrested, but the Goonies defend Sloth and Chunk tells the giant that he can live with his family. Perkins presents Mr. Walsh with foreclosure papers and demands his signature. However, Rosalita discovers a marble bag filled with jewels in Mikey’s jacket. When Mouth translates her exclamation, Mr. Walsh shreds the document and announces that no other families in the boon docks will have to forsake their properties for want of money. As the kids tell the story of their treasure hunt, The Inferno sails out to sea. +
