Marty Black sets himself up as a baggage carrier at the Nevada Center train station, but he is actually a crooked jockey awaiting the arrival of his partner, Silk Henley. While living at Sally's boardinghouse, Marty becomes attached to Midge, a young orphan boy who needs love and guidance. Silk arrives after being tailed by the Information Kid, who believes that Silk is "Cueball" Kelly, who makes big money fixing horse races. A town committee enters Marty's horse in the Caliente Sweepstakes and gives Silk $15,000 to bet on the race, because they believe he is Kelly. Silk takes the money, but plans to skip town before the end of the race. When Marty reprimands Midge for fighting, Sally reveals that the boy was fighting to clear Marty's name. Marty confesses to his misdeeds, and convinces Silk not to steal the town's money. They hide the money under Marty's bed, but the Information Kid finds it. After meeting the real "Kelly," the Kid thinks Silk is trying to cheat Marty and bets all the money on the race. Marty pushes his horse to the limit, and only wins after Midge flings a stone at the horse from his trusty slingshot, and the horse leaps ahead to win. Having finally won a race honestly, Marty also wins the love of Sally and Midge.
