According to the 15 Sep 1923 Exhibitors Trade Review, the film was to be produced as a high-budgeted “special,” consistent with Fox Film Corp.’s latest policy of “no program pictures.”
The 1 Sep 1923 Motion Picture News noted that The Gunfighter was scheduled to arrive at regional exchanges the following day. The film garnered positive notices in the 15 Sep 1923 Motion Picture News, and in the 15 Sep 1923 and 17 Nov 1923 editions of Exhibitors Trade Review. The latter issue indicated that the 4,700-foot picture had been expanded to approximately 6,000 feet.
